(SANTA FE) – Sitting at the roundtable, surrounded by Legislators, on the fourth floor at the state capitol, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham removed her mask and announced that she was lifting the indoor mask mandate.

NEA-New Mexico President Mary Parr-Sánchez provided the following statement in response to the Governor lifting the mask mandate.

"I support this move by Governor Lujan Grisham. She has kept student and educator safety a top priority throughout this very difficult pandemic. As we take in new information, we should adjust our practices. I know that students will be much happier without the mask mandates, and I know that their learning will be accelerated, given that they can now see the full facial expressions of educators that feel safe removing their masks."

Parr-Sánchez added, "I would encourage the public to support any educator or school district that may choose to continue wearing masks for personal safety, but I think this is a sound call by the Governor."

NEA-New Mexico applauds Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for her commitment to the safety of our students, families, educators, and communities throughout New Mexico since the pandemic hit our state in the Spring of 2020.
