Spreading Joy & Justice in Our Schools w/ Kass Minor

June 16, 2023 | 9:00-10:30 AM MST | Virtual

Kass Minor is an inclusive educator deeply involved in local, inquiry-based teacher research and school community development. She has worked as a teacher, staff developer, adjunct professor, speaker, and documentarian. She has contributed content to the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Edutopia, Heinemann Education Blog, inclusiveclassrooms.org, and featured in KQED Mindshift, Parents Magazine, Teaching Tolerance Magazine and the critically acclaimed New York Times Serial Podcast, Nice White Parents.

Kass recently released the book Teaching Fiercely: Spreading Joy & Justice in Our Schools. During this session, Kass will guide us in understanding what it means to be a just teacher in a system that actively incentivizes injustice. Kass will share how we build joyful experiences when injustice and a lack of acceptance face us within our learning communities. Following the session, attendees will be mailed a copy of Teaching Fiercely: Spreading Joy & Justice in Our Schools.

This is a free event for all members.

Educators That Thrive: Wellness Through Resilience

June 27-28 | 8:00-10:00 AM MST | Virtual

One of the biggest predictors of student success is the quality of educators within school communities. As educators and community leaders, we must function at our best to support unprecedented student needs. Teacher “wellness" is becoming a buzzword in education, but the concept can be unclear. Educator wellness initiatives may focus on self-care and mindfulness strategies like deep breathing, yoga, or a wellness space. However, these initiatives can detract from making a more transformative, systemic change when not paired with the foundational mental models necessary for resilience. Join us in understanding evidence-based best practices in neuroscience, positive psychology, and performance science to understand how to develop resilience systems and care for ourselves.

Through a combination of reflections, discussions, and exercises, attendees will engage in powerful learning experiences that go well beneath the surface while remaining fun and empowering! We will engage in practical problem-solving and design actions that support your well-being.

So, pull up this June with your coffee or tea for this engaging and timely two-day series. There will be exciting giveaways throughout the two days together and an opportunity for follow-up in August to support you in building a more resilient version of yourself.

Expect to walk away from the two days:

  • Engaged in a relevant exploration of what's going on under the surface of your burnout
  • Having identified practical ways to cultivate resilience, manage stress, and cope with overwhelming and compassion fatigue
  • With a realistic action plan to feel empowered to cultivate your resilience step by step

Following the session, you will be invited to return for a third session in August-- Participants who complete all three days will receive a wellness gift on behalf of NEA-NM that has been personally curated by our facilitator, Allison Smith, a Life Design and Resilience Coach at The Thrive Designer.
